Position at Unity: I teach US History , Current American History, World Cultures, and Law. Mr Harskamp and myself coordinate National History Day. Ross Bouma and I coach Girls and Boys Golf.

Professional and Educational: I graduated from Dordt College in 1981 with a major in History and a minor in P.E. I taught at Redlands Christian School in Redlands, California. Since the fall of 1983 I have been at Unity, and earned my Masters Degree in History from the University of South Dakota.

Childhood and Family Background: My Dad was in the army when I was born in Tombstone, Arizona. I attended Sioux Center Christian School and Western Christian High back here in NW Iowa. While attending Dordt College I married Mary Vande Kieft. Mary has been employed as the bookkeeper at Hy Vee in Sioux Center. We have three children- Wendy Poppema, who coordinates the resource program at Sioux Falls Christian. Wendy is married to Unity grad Mike Poppema who works at Sioux Biochemical in Sioux Center. Mike and Wendy have three daughters, Jaci, Peyton and Kinzie     Evan is a Dordt College grad and is employed as a trainer at Software Unlimited .  Evan and his wife Jennifer live in Coralville, Iowa, and have a daughter named Claire and a son Eli. - Jennifer works for an academic testing company in Iowa City.   Our daughter Kim from Dordt College and teaches at Hull( Iowa) Christian School.

Church Life: Mary and I attend Faith Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center.

Life Outside of Unity: Mary and I are enjoying being empty nesters. We enjoy golfing and riding bike and spending time with our kids and grandkids.

Why I Teach at Unity: I believe that all of life belongs to our Lord. It has been my pleasure to teach my classes with the word of God as the standard. The opportunity to contribute to young people becoming disciples of the Lord has had a huge impact on me as well as my family.
