Position at Unity: I have the pleasure of teaching Introduction to Art, Drawing and Painting, Sculpture, Advanced Drawing and Painting, Photography, Art Independent Study, Visual Design Arts and Psychology.

Professional and Educational Background: I graduated from Dordt College in 1984 earning a B.A. in Education with a major in Physical Education and a minor in Art. I began my teaching career in Visalia, CA where I taught P.E., Bible, and and a few Art classes to middle and high school students for four years at Central Valley Christian School. The next two years were spent in Pella where I taught K-8th Art and 3rd-5th P.E. at Pella Christian Grade School. The beautiful countryside of northern Michigan beckoned next where I spent three years at Northern Michigan Christian School (McBain) teaching K-12th Art and 6th-8th P.E. My next employer was Pella Christian High School where I taught P.E. and Art for fours until the spring of 1997.

Childhood and Family Background: I was born in Vancouver, British Columbia (that's in Canada). I attended Richmond and Chilliwack Christian Elementary Schools and Chilliwack Public High School. Shirley Byker and I fell in love while attending Dordt and we were married April 17, 1984 and have thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to live in various areas of the country and have felt God's hand leading us in each of our moves.  We are enjoying watching our two children (Wade, Meika) grow up and grow in the Lord.

Church Life: My family attends Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City.  Shirley and I desire to share our gifts in worship.  Shirley plans and leads worship and I enjoy using the visual arts to enhance worship.  We are grateful for the opportunities we have had to share our gifts at Trinity.

Life Outside of Unity: Family, family, family; and that's not a complaint. Some of my hobbies and interests are outdoor activities like biking, canoeing and hiking to high elevations and artistic activities like photography, ceramics, drawing and painting. I also enjoy home remodelling and if I have any time left, I like to read.

Why I Teach at Unity: I view my teaching as a calling from God and I am here to serve Him and my students. I believe all areas of life are under God's domain and at a Christian school, I can proclaim that in my class. In the art class I want my students to see God as the master artist and view creation as His artwork with mankind as the masterpiece of that creation. Art is very important to the development of culture and we need christians to play an important role in the development of that culture.
