Class Description

This course will help students understand the American economic business system and how to become a better consumer in that system as their needs and wants are met by the interaction of businesses, government, and labor. Students will learn how to manage family and personal finances and make well informed purchasing decisions. The course contains 3 simulations in which the students will be participants in our economic society; making real-life choices. The students will participate in a "Stock Market Game", "On Your Own in Central City", and "Family Financial Management".

Class Expectations

Daily Work:

1. Reading of textbook material and other supplemental materials.

2. Taking notes of material discussed in class.

3. Daily work assigned to understanding concepts being taught will be graded on quality of work and will be docked points if turned in late.

4. There will be appropriate class time given to work on daily assignments. Out of class work will also be expected.

Major Projects:

1. 3 Simulations.

a. "Global Stock Market Game". Starts in class and then on your own.

b. "On Your Own in Central City". One week simulation in class.

c. "Family Financial Management". A 2-3 week in class simulation.

Testing Information:

1. There will be a test after each chapter.
2. Pop quizzes on reading assignments and notes can be expected.

3. Final Exam will be given at the end of the course.

Grading:

1. Simulations will be graded on the basis of participation, points assigned, and a short paper on their experiences.

2. I grade on a point system (see grading link on Consumer Economics Home Page).

3. Final grade will be based on the points earned out of the total points possible. Forty percent 1st nine weeks, forty percent 2nd nine weeks and twenty percent final exam.
4. Good class participation may raise final grade.
