Learning Strategies

Class Description
Learning Strategies is a class which helps students learn strategies that they use in daily work, studying for tests, taking tests, and for carry over through all their classes.
Class Expectations
Testing Information
--Studying for tests is done together using strategies such as mnemonics, repetition, chunking to assist in memory and understanding.
Daily Work
--Students are given time to do homework asking for assistance when necessary.
--Preteaching of concepts is often utilized
--Completion of daily work is checked
(daily for Freshmen and gradually decreasing each year)
Major Projects
--Major project assignments are broken down into workable deadlines to decrease waiting until the last minute
Final Grade
--25% Learning the strategies
--25% Using the strategies
--25% Use of class time
--25% Completion of homework on time and thoroughly
Class Outline
1st Nine Weeks
1. Emphasize ability to learn in various ways
2. Emphasize importance of completing work
3. Emphasize acceptance of hard work it will take to get through high school
4. Introduce study skills to all freshmen and emphasize in Learning Strategies
5. Find strengths and weaknesses and appropriate modifications needed for each student in each class
2nd Nine Weeks
1. Apply strategies when studying for and taking tests
2. Assist in studying for and taking exams
3rd Nine Weeks
1. Introduce new strategies for organization as they begin new classes
2. Find strengths and weakness and appropriate modifications needed for each student in each class
4th Nine Weeks
1. Continue strategy work
2. Assist in studying for and taking exams
